Best Time to Visit Morocco: When to Go and the Best Places to See

Morocco does not have one best season — it has four, and each one suits a different kind of trip. The coast is glorious in summer, the Atlas and the Sahara are perfect in spring and autumn, and the imperial cities glow in winter light. The real question is not “when is Morocco good” but “when is Morocco good for the trip I want”.

We run vans and cars on Moroccan roads every single day of the year, so this guide comes from lived driving experience, not a weather chart. Below you will find the honest month-by-month picture — temperatures, crowds and the best places to match each season.

Morocco’s four seasons at a glance

Morocco’s geography explains almost everything: the Atlantic coast keeps temperatures mild, the Atlas mountains trap rain and snow, and the Sahara beyond them is dry and huge. Plan around the region you are visiting, not just the calendar.

  • Spring (March–May): mild days, green landscapes, the classic golden window across the whole country.
  • Summer (June–August): hot inland, perfect on the coast and in the mountains, quiet cities.
  • Autumn (September–November): warm days, cooler nights, fewer crowds — our favourite season for the whole country.
  • Winter (December–February): crisp sunny days, cold desert nights, festivals and empty streets.

Spring (March–May): the golden window

Spring is when Morocco shows off. Temps sit in the low 20s across the cities, the Atlas passes are clear and green, and the deserts are warm in the day with cool, comfortable nights. It is the most popular season for good reason — which also means hotels and drivers book fast.

  • Best for: everything — the imperial cities, a Sahara loop, and day trips into the mountains.
  • Watch out: Easter and school holidays bring crowds to Marrakech.

Summer (June–August): coast and mountains

Inland Morocco is genuinely hot in summer — Marrakech regularly passes 38°C. Smart travellers head for the Atlantic coast, where Essaouira stays in the mid-20s with ocean breezes, or up into the High Atlas for cooler air and shaded valleys. The cities empty out, which makes the souks and the road surprisingly pleasant in the early morning and late afternoon.

  • Best for: the Essaouira coast, High Atlas villages, and empty imperial cities.
  • Watch out: the Sahara is stunning at sunrise but punishing at noon — leave early and rest in the shade.

Autumn (September–November): our favourite

September and October give you summer weather without the stampede: warm seas on the coast, golden light in the Atlas, and desert nights that are finally comfortable again. November stays mild everywhere and the crowds thin out further. If your dates are flexible, book this window.

  • Best for: the same full palette as spring — coast, mountains, cities and the Sahara.
  • Watch out: from mid-November some mountain passes can close after heavy snow.

Winter (December–February): cities under sun

Winter is a quiet, bright season. Days across Marrakech, Casablanca and Fès sit in the high teens, perfect for walking the medinas. The Sahara is the star: crisp blue skies, warm midday sun and cold nights that make the campfire experience genuine. Pack layers and you will love it.

  • Best for: imperial cities, the Merzouga desert and Essaouira on empty beaches.
  • Watch out: evenings need a warm jacket, and snow can dust the Atlas peaks — the photo opportunity of a lifetime.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to visit Morocco?

May and October give the widest comfort across coast, Atlas, cities and desert: warm days, cool nights and fewer people than the peak holiday weeks.

Does it rain often in Morocco?

Most rain falls between November and March, mainly on the Atlantic and northern regions. The south and the desert stay mostly dry all year; a winter day in Marrakech is far more likely to be sunny than rainy.

When is the best time to visit the Moroccan Sahara?

March–May and September–November. The desert is comfortable day and night, and the light is dramatic. Summer works if you travel early and late; winter is beautiful but the nights genuinely drop below zero — you will want a warm layer and a fireplace.

When is the best time for the coast (Essaouira)?

June to September, when the ocean breeze keeps the town in the mid-20s while the rest of Morocco bakes. Spring and autumn are lovely too, just windier.
