Camel Riding in the Palmeraie Palm Grove, Marrakech

A two-hour camel ride through the Palmeraie, the palm grove that runs along the Atlas foothills, with mint tea and a handler leading each camel.

2 hours Starts in Marrakech Ends in La Palmeraie Private tour

About this tour

The Palmeraie is the long green ribbon of date palms that runs for 16 kilometres along the foothills of the Atlas, right on the edge of Marrakech. Most visitors walk through it without ever leaving the main road. This ride takes you off that road, along irrigation channels and between the palm groves where Berber families still tend their small plots of vegetables under the shade. It is the easiest experience we offer: your camel walks at the same pace as a slow bicycle, and a handler walks beside every second camel.

Good to know

  • No experience needed Camel riding here is very easy. Children as young as 5 ride with an adult on the same camel.
  • Best season November to March is green and cool. From May to September shade is scarce and we ride early in the morning.
  • Early and late light The grove is lit beautifully at 08:00 and again at 17:00. We avoid the flat white light of midday.
  • Weight per camel One or two riders of up to 90 kg each. Our team will help you find the right camel.
  • Tea and sugar The welcome tea is traditionally very sweet. Say so and your host will add less.
  • Photos You can use your phone throughout. Your handler takes the group shots for you.
  • Getting there The entrance is 10 minutes from the Marrakech medina by car, or reachable by local petit taxi.
  • Quiet animals Our camels are worked in short morning and evening shifts with rest days, and are never ridden at midday in summer.

Why travellers love this trip

  • A green lung in the city Step off the road and the noise drops. You hear water in the irrigation channels and birds in the palms.
  • Two hours is enough It fits into a free afternoon and leaves your evening free for the Jemaa el-Fna.
  • Works for every age Grandparents, toddlers and teenagers all ride at the same slow pace on the same camels.
  • Distinctive photos Tall trunks framing narrow light shafts give you the Marrakech shots you will not get elsewhere.

Common questions

What age must I be to ride?

There is no minimum age. Children from 5 ride with an adult on the same camel, and under-5s are usually better off watching from the terrace with a juice.

Can two people ride one camel?

Yes, up to two adults of about 90 kg each. Our handlers match riders to camels by size and temperament on the day.

How hard is it to ride a camel?

The mount is the only tricky moment and your handler lifts you if needed. Once you are up, the camel walks at the pace of a slow bicycle and simply follows the lead camel.

Is camel riding suitable for me?

We work with animals that are rested every second day, used only in short morning and evening shifts, and never ridden at midday in summer. If you prefer, we can swap this ride for a walking tour of the same grove.

How do I get to the Palmeraie?

The Palmeraie is just outside Marrakech. Choose a pickup request from your riad or hotel, or meet the team at the location confirmed with your booking.

What should we wear?

Long trousers are strongly recommended because you straddle the saddle. Avoid shorts and loose dresses. A scarf to tie around the reins is a good idea.

Can children ride alone?

No. Children always ride with an adult on the same camel, and our handlers stay within arm’s reach of every child for the whole ride.

What is included in the price?

The camel, the saddle, a handler for every two camels, mint tea with almonds, and the return walk. Optional riad pickup can be added from the booking form.
